Words do not adequately convey our appreciation to Alcea’s team for helping us bring our beautiful son into our family! As we contemplated surrogacy, we thoroughly evaluated approximately 25 surrogacy agencies (the spreadsheet tracker is our souvenir) and we learned just from those conversations and research that Alcea is one of a kind. They were the only agency we spoke with that (1) had a relatively quick average match time of 90 days; and (2) did not collect any agency fees until intended parents are “matched” with a potential surrogate (and even then they do not collect the full agency fee but rather prorate it over key surrogacy journey milestones), which evidences their genuine intention to meaningfully partner with intended parents throughout the surrogacy journey (an aspect that was very important to us). Fast forward to actually working with Alcea and our experience was something magical. The professionalism, responsiveness, thoughtfulness and genuine care the team demonstrated in the matchmaking process enabled us to select our surrogate from reviewing the first profile Alcea shared (well within the 90 day average match time). After selecting a surrogate, throughout the medical clearance, legal clearance, embryo transfer, pregnancy, birth and post-birth, the Alcea team, and our case manager in particular, was there every step of the way as a true surrogacy journey partner. Now whenever we hear that someone is struggling to bring a child into their family and potentially considering surrogacy, we do not hesitate to share what an incredible experience we had partnering with Alcea. While a desired outcome is impossible for anyone to guarantee, we are of the view that Alcea’s genuinely caring and thoughtful approach in doing their part throughout the overall surrogacy journey put us in the best possible position to make our dream of having a child a reality. Between the personal experience of closed adoption and the years of the infertility roller coaster that followed, a calling to third party reproduction seemed inevitable for Alcea Co-Founder and Executive Director Angela Richardson-Mook. With a successful corporate project management background, fifteen+ years of third-party reproduction expertise, and professional connections to alternative family building nationwide, she has brought her dream of a female-owned, full-service, holistic surrogacy agency to life. As an adopted woman, a gestational carrier, an egg donor, and a mother via IVF, she has a unique outlook on the mechanics of what truly composes a family. By leveraging her knowledge as a corporate executive and as an active member of the surrogacy community, she built unique bonds with a community of people all experiencing different nuances of infertility, yet with all the same dissatisfaction with the status quo. Personal relationships with intended mothers and fathers, surrogates, donors, and agency employees, evolved into the collective creation of a decidedly different surrogacy agency strategy.
As a queer mother of three, who has helped to grow two separate families as a surrogate, Christy understands the complex and unique needs of third-party reproduction. She brings more than 15 years of personal experience in the community, including the expansion of her own family via reciprocal IVF, carrying her Partner’s biological embryo. The desire to serve others is what ultimately called her to surrogacy. and this is when she first met Angela in 2005. After years of working in financial operations management and executive corporate travel, she was delighted to embark on advocacy work that would best utilize her collective career accomplishments and personal experiences. Surrogacy and third-party reproduction have shaped her life’s work and is where her heart truly resides. In addition to professional practices, staying active and healthy are important parts of her daily life. Besides a small obsession with podcasts and anything true-crime; some of Christy's passions include exploring outdoors with family, hiking, kayaking, and practicing yoga.
Rose Cullen is an editor and artist currently based in New York. As the child of a surrogate, Rose grew up fascinated with the third party reproductive world. They hope to help bring the teams vision to life using robust videography. Currently they are studying Japanese and working to become certified in the Adobe Suite and Davinci Resolve programs.
