Their motivations also vary. Some describe a strong desire to help others, compensation may be an important consideration, and many people are motivated by both. No donor or surrogate should be expected to present herself as purely altruistic in order for her decision to be respected.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Egg donation and surrogacy are different commitments<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egg donation involves medical screening, ovarian-stimulation medications, monitoring and an egg-retrieval procedure. Gestational surrogacy involves embryo transfer, pregnancy, delivery and postpartum recovery. Both involve real medical burdens and risks, but they should not be treated as interchangeable experiences.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do people become egg donors?<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Motivations can include helping another person have a child, interest in the donation experience, financial compensation, or a combination of reasons. A donor should receive accurate information about ovarian stimulation, retrieval risks, genetic connection, identity-release policies, future contact and the possibility of donor-conceived offspring before consenting.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do people become gestational surrogates?<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gestational carriers may value pregnancy, want to help another family, appreciate the financial compensation available in a permitted arrangement, or have several motivations at once. A reputable program should focus on voluntary and informed participation rather than judging whether someone&#8217;s motivation is \u201cselfless enough.\u201d<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How should compensation be understood?<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compensation is not simply reimbursement for medical expenses or \u201cpain and suffering.\u201d In compensated surrogacy, base compensation can recognize the time, inconvenience, physical burden and commitment of the journey, while expenses and reimbursements may be handled separately. Egg-donor compensation likewise recognizes the time and burden of participation and should not depend on the number or quality of eggs retrieved.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Altruism and compensation can coexist<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Receiving compensation does not make a donor or gestational carrier less generous, and participating without base compensation does not automatically make an arrangement safer or more ethical. Ethical practice depends on informed consent, appropriate medical screening, freedom from coercion, independent advice where appropriate, transparent financial terms and respect for bodily autonomy.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What intended parents should keep in mind<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do not pressure a donor or carrier to minimize the medical burden of the process.<\/li><li>Do not assume one \u201ccorrect\u201d motivation for participating.<\/li><li>Make compensation and expense terms transparent before treatment begins.<\/li><li>Respect the donor&#8217;s and carrier&#8217;s privacy and informed-consent rights.<\/li><li>Use qualified medical, psychological and legal professionals appropriate to the arrangement.<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom line<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egg donors and gestational carriers make important contributions to family building, but respectful language matters.
