When embryos remain continuously stored under properly controlled cryogenic conditions, they may remain usable for many years. However, whether a particular embryo can be transferred depends on more than time alone, including how it was frozen, embryo quality, laboratory records, storage conditions, the receiving clinic’s policies, consent documents, and the medical plan for the person who will carry the pregnancy.

How are embryos stored?

Embryos are usually cryopreserved after fertilization and several days of development. Most modern IVF laboratories use vitrification, a rapid-freezing technique designed to prevent damaging ice-crystal formation. The embryos are then stored at extremely low temperatures in cryogenic tanks.

At those temperatures, normal biological activity is effectively paused. The passage of calendar time is therefore not comparable to an embryo continuing to age in the body. The age of the person whose eggs were used at the time the embryos were created remains much more relevant to chromosome risk than the number of birthdays that pass while the embryos are in storage.

Is there a maximum number of years embryos can stay frozen?

There is no universal medical rule in the United States that all frozen embryos expire after a fixed number of years. Storage limits may instead come from a clinic’s consent forms, storage agreement, payment policy, local law, or the rules of a specific storage facility.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s guidance on cryostorage in IVF laboratories emphasizes careful identification, monitoring, documentation, consent, emergency planning, and risk management. These systems matter because embryos must remain correctly labeled and continuously maintained under appropriate conditions throughout storage.

Does longer storage reduce the chance of success?

The research is not completely uniform, and storage time should not be treated as the only predictor of success.

A large 2024 study of more than 58,000 vitrified blastocysts found no independent association between storage duration and live birth after accounting for other variables. The authors identified factors such as age at egg retrieval, embryo quality, body mass index, uterine factors, and treatment details as more important influences on outcomes. You can review the study in PubMed.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis found associations between longer cryostorage and lower clinical-pregnancy and live-birth rates in the pooled observational data, particularly during the first months of storage, but it also reported that outcomes appeared to plateau after two years. The authors warned that differences among patients, embryo quality, freezing methods, study design, and other confounding factors limit conclusions about cause and effect. The review is available through PubMed.

In practical terms, an embryo does not become unusable merely because it has been frozen for several years. The fertility clinic should assess the embryo’s history and the current medical plan rather than relying on storage duration alone.

What matters more than the storage date?

Age when the eggs were retrieved

Embryo chromosome risk is closely related to the age of the egg source when the eggs were retrieved. If embryos were created from eggs retrieved at age 30 and transferred years later, the embryos do not acquire the chromosome-risk profile of older eggs simply because they remained frozen.

Embryo quality and developmental stage

The embryo’s stage and laboratory assessment before freezing may affect how the clinic evaluates it. Embryo grading can help a laboratory prioritize embryos, but it is not a guarantee of implantation or live birth. Our guide to embryo grading and lower-grade embryos explains what those ratings can and cannot tell you.

Freezing and thawing methods

Embryos frozen years ago may have been preserved with a different technique from the one a receiving laboratory currently uses. That does not automatically make them unsuitable, but the embryology team should review the original laboratory report, the cryopreservation method, the storage device, and the planned warming protocol.

Storage continuity and records

The clinic or storage facility should be able to confirm the embryo inventory, labeling, consent status, and chain of custody. If embryos are being moved to another clinic, both laboratories need to coordinate acceptance, documentation, transport, and timing before anything is shipped.

The current transfer plan

The person who will carry the pregnancy must still complete the clinic’s current medical evaluation. In a surrogacy journey, legal clearance, insurance review, cycle coordination, and the gestational carrier’s medical clearance are normally completed before transfer. See our overview of what happens after matching with a surrogate and before embryo transfer.

What should you ask your fertility clinic?

How many embryos are stored, and at what developmental stage?

When and how were they frozen?

Does the laboratory have complete embryology and storage records?

What is the clinic’s experience warming embryos preserved with that method?

Are any consent forms, storage renewals, or fees outstanding?

Will the embryos remain at the current facility or need to be transported?

Does the receiving clinic accept embryos from that laboratory and storage device?

Would any testing or re-biopsy be considered, and what are the risks and limitations?

What medical evaluation is required before transfer?

Can an older frozen embryo be used with a surrogate?

Potentially, yes. Storage duration by itself does not rule out using an embryo in a gestational-surrogacy journey. The IVF clinic must confirm that it can accept and warm the embryo, review the laboratory history, and approve the transfer plan. The surrogate must also receive independent medical clearance.

PGT-A is not automatically required just because an embryo has been stored for a long time. Testing decisions depend on the embryo’s history, whether it was previously biopsied, the age of the egg source, the clinic’s recommendations, and the risks of thawing, biopsy, refreezing, and warming. Read more in Is PGT-A Required for Surrogacy?

Bottom line

Frozen embryos do not come with one universal expiration date. Many remain usable after years of storage, but time is only one part of the evaluation. The safest next step is to ask the fertility clinic to review the original embryology report, storage history, consent status, and planned warming and transfer protocol.

If you are preparing for a surrogacy journey, Expecting.ai can help you explore available surrogate profiles and coordinate the next steps with the professionals responsible for medical and legal clearance.

This article is for general educational purposes and is not medical or legal advice.
