It is a screening measure based on height and weight\u2014not a diagnosis and not a complete measure of health. Clinics set their own eligibility policies, and there is no single nationwide BMI cutoff that applies to every U.S. surrogacy program.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is BMI?<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BMI is calculated from a person&#8217;s weight relative to height. It can help clinicians identify population-level associations with certain health risks, but it does not directly measure body fat, fitness, metabolic health or whether someone can safely carry a pregnancy.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why do fertility clinics consider BMI?<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pregnancy itself carries medical risks. At higher BMI levels, population studies have found increased rates of complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, cesarean delivery and some anesthesia-related challenges. Very low BMI can also be associated with pregnancy risks. A fertility clinic considers these findings together with the candidate&#8217;s obstetric history and overall health.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there a BMI requirement for surrogates?<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no universal U.S. rule requiring every gestational carrier to fall within one exact BMI range. Agencies may publish their own preliminary criteria, while the treating fertility clinic ultimately determines medical eligibility under its protocols. A candidate who meets an agency&#8217;s BMI guideline is not automatically medically cleared, and someone outside a particular agency&#8217;s range should not assume that the number alone defines her health.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BMI is only one part of medical screening<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A proper evaluation may include prior pregnancy and delivery records, blood pressure, current medical conditions, medications, laboratory testing, infectious-disease screening and other factors relevant to pregnancy and embryo transfer. Psychological evaluation and legal screening are separate parts of a gestational-surrogacy journey.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if your BMI is outside a program&#8217;s range?<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask whether the cutoff comes from the agency or the fertility clinic and whether individualized medical review is possible. If a clinician recommends weight change before pregnancy, discuss a safe and realistic plan with your own healthcare professional. Avoid crash diets or rapid weight-loss strategies solely to qualify for a program.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom line<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BMI can be useful as one screening tool, but it should not be presented as a complete assessment of a prospective surrogate&#8217;s health or worthiness.
